A review of the numerous studies of the
Ferron and their relevance to understanding Ferron paleogeography, facies,
depositional history, and stratal architecture
Addresses the question of how beds of coal are
distributed within fluvio-deltaic strata.The principal coal beds of the Ferron are mapped utilizing outcrop and
subsurface data.The distribution of
coal is related to landward pinch-outs of shoreline sandstones and to fluvial
channel belts.
Peat undergoes a lot of compaction in the
transformation to coal.It is important
to know the amount in order to restore cross sections to the time immediately
following deposition.This paper
provides a number based on analysis of a Ferron outcrop.
The numerous volcanic ash layers preserved in coals
of the Ferron represent perfectly isochronous surfaces.They are of considerable value in making
detailed correlations.In this case, the
history of the C coal bed is determined using its layers of volcanic ash.
Deltas have long been recognized in the Ferron.But just how large could a delta or even a
deltaic complex have been during mid-Cretaceous time in central Utah?This paper addresses the question of whether
or not bulges of the shoreline reflect predominantly deposition features -- deltas -- or result from patterns of differential subsidence of tectonic origin.
Eustatic fluctuations in sea level and tectonically
produced variations in subsidence rate and supply of sediment are the two main
controlling factors for clastic wedges of the Western Interior Cretaceous.The origins of three clastic wedges are
interpreted in this context.
